NICARAGUA: Ortega deals fresh blow to institutional stability

President Daniel Ortega began the fourth year of his current term by issuing a decree to extend the mandates of current electoral and judicial officials. The move is yet another flagrant breach of the constitution (by law only the legislature is authorised to make the decision) and follows last year's illegal supreme court (CSJ) ruling overturning the ban on presidential re-election [WR-09-42].
